Artist Statement

Inspired by the landscape of the Upper Hudson Valley where I live, it is the luminous quality of the light that drives me to paint. Nature offers a never-ending source of visual surprises—some quiet and enduring, others profoundly fleeting. The moments that compel me most are those shaped by the atmosphere: a sudden break in the clouds, the heavy air before a storm, or the intense clarity of the sun. There is a deep emotional resonance in watching the day rapidly change character, and my work is a response to that transient energy.

To capture these changes, I turn to watercolor. I consider each watercolor a contest between pigment and paper. Whether capturing dappled shade across a meadow or sunlight piercing a tall maple, the challenge lies in letting the wet pigment flow freely while protecting the bare paper—the true source of light in my work.

Ultimately, my goal is not to perfectly replicate a landscape, but to freeze the exact quality of light that made it look remarkable for a few minutes. I paint to preserve those sudden visual surprises before the day changes character completely.

Catherine Herman, Hudson Valley watercolor artist, standing outdoors during a hike, inspired by natural light and regional landscapes of the Catskills and Berkshire Mountains

Artist Bio

Catherine Herman is a Hudson Valley watercolorist dedicated to capturing the transient energy and luminous quality of natural light. Born in New York City, she developed a deep connection to the regional landscape during summers spent in the Catskills and on her grandfather’s farm in Columbia County.

She began her creative career as a filmmaker, a background that trained her to understand light and its profound impact on a subject. This training—combined with her perspective as an avid gardener—informs her appreciation for nature’s colors and the emotional resonance they evoke.

Catherine views each painting as a fluid contest between pigment and paper. Catherine draws inspiration from nature during long hikes throughout the Hudson Valley, the Catskills, and the Berkshire Mountains.
